About Dim Sum Box

Dim Sum Box is a JoyArc original top-down packing puzzle set in a Chinese pastry shop. Each level hands you one or more whole slabs of a single-colour cake — osmanthus, mung bean, hawthorn or taro — and a red lacquered gift box whose empty cells are marked with a dashed silhouette.

You slice a slab along grid lines into the pieces you need, then drag each piece into the box. A piece only snaps down when its colour matches the cell and the shape fits; nothing can overlap or hang outside the rim. The fewer cuts you use, the higher the star rating, so the real question is not whether you can fill the box but how cheaply you can shape the pastry to do it.

There is no timer and no fail state: you can undo, restart or reopen any of the ten boxes at any time. Each box ends with a one to three star grade based on your cut budget, and the star rating is the only score.

Key Features & Highlights

One slab, one colour

Every ingredient is a single-colour pastry slab, so the puzzle is about routing the right colour into the right slots as much as it is about shape.

Cut on the grid

Straight vertical or horizontal slices along cell lines; a cut is only allowed when both halves stay in one connected piece.

Colour-matched packing

A piece is accepted only when every one of its cells lands on a matching-colour slot inside the box, with no overlap.

Fewer cuts, more stars

Three stars up to the level's par, two at par plus one, otherwise one, so planning the slicing order matters.

Ten hand-built boxes

A tutorial-to-master curve: from a single 2x2 slab you drop straight in, up to an eight-piece gift box that needs four careful cuts.

No timer, full undo

Undo and restart at any time; completed boxes and the sound setting are kept locally in this browser.

How to Play - Rules & Objectives

  1. 1Drag a whole pastry piece from the tray into the gift box. It only locks in when the shape and colour line up with the dashed cells.
  2. 2If a slab is too big or the wrong shape, press the cut button, then swipe across the slab along a grid line to slice it. Horizontal swipe cuts across, vertical swipe cuts lengthwise.
  3. 3Cut a long slab into several small pieces when the box needs them spread across separate slots of the same colour.
  4. 4Use as few cuts as you can: three stars up to the level's par, two stars one cut over.
  5. 5Stuck? Undo (Z) steps back one move, and restart (R) resets the box; the level list (☰) reopens any of the ten boxes.

Pro Tips & High-Score Strategies

  • Read the dashed silhouette before cutting: count how many separate same-colour slots you must fill, because that sets the minimum number of pieces.
  • Do not split a slab you could place whole. A single straight piece that already matches a slot costs zero cuts and three stars.
  • Cut from the edge inward. Peeling one small piece off a long slab keeps both halves connected, which is the only legal kind of cut.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Dim Sum Box hard?
It starts with a single 2x2 slab you drop in with no cuts and builds up to a four-cut gift box. There is no timer and you can undo or restart, so difficulty is about planning the fewest cuts rather than reacting fast.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It is touch-first: drag to place and swipe in cut mode to slice. It has been rendered and played at desktop and at a 390 by 844 phone viewport; real-device frame rate has not been benchmarked, so no mobile performance figure is claimed.
Where is my progress saved?
Completed boxes and the sound setting are stored in this browser's local storage. There is no account and no cloud save, so clearing site data removes the record.
Does the game have sound?
It has short sound effects synthesized with the Web Audio API: a soft cut, a wooden placement tick and a chime when a box is finished. There is no music track, and you can mute with the sound button.
