Game Controls & How to Steer

Player 1: AorD, W, S
Walk left and right, jump, and hold to plant your feet and take the rope tension.
Player 2: LeftorRight, Up, Down
Same three verbs on the arrow keys. Neither player can finish a room alone.
PorEsc, M, R
Pause, mute the synthesised sound effects, or restart the current room immediately.
On-screen pads
Touch layouts get a movement pair, a jump and a brace button for each player on one screen.

About Tether Trouble

Tether Trouble is a same-screen two-player co-op puzzle game built on the JoyArc original engine. Two climbers are tied together by a 32-segment elastic rope, and every room asks for something one of them cannot do alone: one has to drop into a pit to act as a counterweight so the other can reach a ledge, or brace against a crate while their partner swings across.

The rope is simulated, not animated. Each segment is a constrained point solved six times per fixed step, so it stretches, sags and snaps taut for real. Pull too hard and the tension readout climbs; hold that load too long and the rope breaks, costing both players time rather than a life.

Twelve single-screen rooms introduce one idea at a time: pushing a crate, using a partner as a counterweight, swinging from a hook, a shortened rope that forces the two of you to move as one, and finally a room with spikes where a broken rope is genuinely dangerous. Progress is saved locally, so a session can be a single room or the whole run.

Key Features & Highlights

A rope that actually solves

Thirty-two constrained segments, six solver passes per fixed step. The rope sags, stretches and snaps taut because the simulation says so, not because a curve was drawn.

Co-op that needs both people

No room can be finished by one player. Being the counterweight, bracing a crate and swinging a partner across are all roles, not busywork.

Failure costs time, not lives

A rope break or a fall returns both players to the room checkpoint in about 1.5 seconds. There is no timer and no life count to protect.

Twelve rooms, one idea each

Crate, counterweight, hook swing, shortened rope, braced crate, spikes. Every room adds a single new constraint instead of stacking difficulty.

How to Play - Rules & Objectives

  1. 1Pick a room and start. Both players are tied together; the rope is drawn as a dotted line with a tension readout.
  2. 2Walk with A / D and the arrow keys, jump with W and Up. Holding S or Down plants your feet and takes the rope load, which is what lets you anchor your partner.
  3. 3Push the glowing crate into the gate to clear the room. A crate only counts when it is fully inside.
  4. 4If you fall or the rope snaps, you both return to the room checkpoint after about a second and a half. Nothing is lost, so try the swing again.
  5. 5The rope length changes between rooms. When it gets short, you have to move together instead of pulling apart.

Pro Tips & High-Score Strategies

  • Brace before your partner jumps, not after. The tension spike happens on take-off, and a planted pair of feet absorbs it without dragging you both forward.
  • A snapped rope is sometimes better than a slow one: if you need the rope short and taut, letting it break and re-form in five seconds resets it to a clean line.
  • When the crate is on a ledge, do not push it. Pull your partner down first so their weight holds the rope, then walk the crate over the edge.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is Tether Trouble free, and does it need two devices?
It is free with no in-game ads, no purchases and no downloads. Both players share one keyboard or one touch screen; there is no online multiplayer and no second device is needed.
Can one person play it alone?
Yes. Solo mode gives one person control of both climbers, which is harder to coordinate but works for every room. There is no CPU partner.
What happens when the rope breaks?
The rope snaps, both players are returned to the room checkpoint, and the rope re-forms after five seconds. It costs time rather than a life, and there is no timer.
Does level progress save?
Room progress and the mute preference are stored in this browser only. There is no account or cloud sync, and clearing site data resets your progress.
