About One Beat

One Beat is a single-button rhythm game built entirely in the browser. Every drum, bass note and arpeggio is synthesised live with the Web Audio API at runtime, so the game ships no audio files at all, and each of the six tracks is generated from a seed rather than hand-authored.

The mechanic is deliberately narrow: one key, and the only question is whether you press it at the right moment. What changes is the judge. A clean combo tightens the timing window by fifteen percent at twenty notes and twenty-five percent at fifty, and Fever tightens it again. The longer you hold a streak, the more precise you have to be, which makes staying calm harder than starting fast.

Feedback is explicit rather than vague: every press reports Perfect, Good, Early or Late, so a player can see whether they are rushing or dragging. Five misses end a run, and the results screen grades the performance from C to S with a locally saved best score.

Key Features & Highlights

No audio files at all

Kick, snare, hats, bass and an eight-step arpeggio are synthesised at runtime with Web Audio. The whole soundtrack is code, so the game stays small.

Six generated tracks

Six tempos from 84 to 152 BPM, each with a note chart produced from a seed. The same seed always produces the same chart, so a score is reproducible.

A judge that reacts to you

The timing window tightens as your combo climbs: fifteen percent narrower at twenty notes, twenty-five percent at fifty, and tighter again during Fever.

Feedback that teaches

Every press is labelled Perfect, Good, Early or Late. You can see whether you are rushing the beat instead of guessing.

How to Play - Rules & Objectives

  1. 1Pick a track and a difficulty, then press to start. The only control is a single key, a click or a tap.
  2. 2Notes travel toward the line. Press when they reach it; the closer to the exact beat, the better the judgement.
  3. 3Watch the verdict text. Early means you pressed ahead of the beat, Late means you were behind it; adjust rather than mashing.
  4. 4Hold a combo to build the score multiplier. At twenty consecutive notes Fever begins and the multiplier doubles, but the timing window also tightens.
  5. 5Five misses ends the run. The results screen grades you from C to S and saves your best score in this browser.

Pro Tips & High-Score Strategies

  • If your results are mostly Early, you are reacting to the visual instead of the beat. Try pressing slightly after the note looks aligned.
  • Use the audio offset slider once, at the start. A device whose sound lags will otherwise read as permanently Late on every note.
  • During Fever the window is at its tightest. Deliberately easing off for one note is often better than risking a miss that resets the combo.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is One Beat free, and does it use headphones-friendly audio?
It is free with no in-game ads, no purchases and no downloads. All sound is synthesised by the browser; there is no music file to load and the game starts instantly.
Can I play it with one finger on a phone?
Yes. Every action is a single press, so a phone needs one finger and a keyboard needs one key. The game also has a mute button and an audio offset slider for devices whose sound lags.
Why is the timing window getting stricter?
The window narrows as your combo grows: fifteen percent at twenty notes, twenty-five percent at fifty, and tighter during Fever. It is the difficulty curve, and it keeps a long streak meaningful.
Are the songs the same every time?
The six tempos are fixed, but each note chart is generated from a seed. A given seed always produces the same chart, so scores can be compared; a different seed varies the chart.
